Bearskin Lake First Nation Evacuees Begin Return Home

Residents of Bearskin Lake First Nation that were evacuated to Thunder Bay recently due to flooding in their home community are beginning to return home today.
Multiple flights are scheduled over the next few days to transfer the over 150 residents that have been hosted in Thunder Bay since November 14.
“Bearskin Lake Community Leadership discussed the river situation with the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and determined that the flow levels and ice conditions had returned to a level where they were comfortable with returning the community members home,” said Dave Paxton, Deputy Chief – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue. “Work still continues on the roads and other infrastructure to repair and the MNR will continue to monitor the river conditions.”
The community declared a state of emergency on November 10 due to an ice jam along the Severn River, causing water to rise rapidly close by. Bearskin Lake First Nation is a fly-in community located approximately 425 km north of Sioux Lookout and has a population of approximately 460.
