Beausoleil First Nation members upset with settlement fund distribution – Simcoe County

Members of Beausoleil First Nation are demanding they get a say in what is done with the government settlement money awarded by the Canadian and Ontario governments in November over a long-standing treaty dispute.

“Chief and council went ahead and came up with a band resolution for the community, which the members didn’t get a say in,” said band member Kevin McCue. “They didn’t follow through on their duty for consultation.”

In 2018, seven area First Nations agreed to a $1.1-billion government payout over the controversial Williams Treaties from 1923.
