Walpole Island’s Cheryl Mitchell and Delaware Nation’s Savana Smith are Indigenous Ontario golf champions for the third consecutive year.
Mitchell captured the women’s title by finishing the three-day tournament Wednesday at 10 over at MontHill Golf and Country Club in Caledonia.
Mitchell, the 2003 Ontario women’s amateur champion, fired a 1-over 73 in the final round after shooting 77 and 76. She won by 10 strokes over runner-up Melanie Burgess of Matachewan First Nation.
Smith was third overall in the women’s standings at 23 over following rounds of 78, 83 and 78. She’s the junior girls’ champion for the third year in a row.
Delaware Nation’s Alisha Jacobs was 12th overall.
Mitchell won the inaugural Indigenous Ontario championship in 2022. She placed second to Skyesong Alexis in 2023, but later was awarded the title.
Alexis’s scores have been scrubbed from the Golf Association of Ontario website. GAO officials could not be reached for comment on the decision to give the 2023 title to Mitchell.
