Dene Nation Calls on Governments to Act on the Final Report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons

[Denendeh, Northwest Territories – October 4, 2021] – The Dene Nation calls on the Federal and Territorial Governments to address and update families on the process of engagement and implementation of the June 3, 2021, The National Inquiry’s Final Report, “ Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.”

Gender-based violence is a reality in Canada. Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 Sprit persons experience gender-based violence. According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation statistics,” 67% of Canadians know a woman who has experienced physical or sexual abuse. The rate of Indigenous women killed is six times the rate of non-Indigenous women. 6,000+ women and children sleep in shelters on any given night because it isn’t safe at home.”

The federal 2020-21 budget had reserved $2.2 billion for implementing the inquiry’s recommendations. The recommendations include prioritizing equitable funding, oversight for the implementation of the Calls for Justice, data collection, improving policing agencies and proper implementation and monitoring of Gladue reports.

We acknowledge a disparity in Address with NWT RCMP Indigenous relations, racist attitudes, action plans for communities to combat substance and human trafficking with authentic protocols and community leadership initiatives. We ask what the RCMP’s action plan for investigating NWT cold-case MMIWG cases is?
