Wendake, QC, April 23, 2012 – The Chief of the Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador, Ghislain Picard, is pleased with the decision rendered on April 18th by the Federal Court which ruled that the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal must adjudicate on the federal government’s responsibility with respect to the discriminatory treatment imposed on First Nation children.

In its ruling, the Federal Court supports the First Nation Child and Family Caring Society of Canada and the Assembly of First Nations who request that the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal rule on the unfairness and discriminatory services offered by the federal government to First Nation children when compared to services offered by the provinces to all other Canadians.”We have witnessed repeated procedural obstruction from the federal government in this case; the time has come for the government to publicly account for its discriminatory policies towards our children”, said Chief Ghislain Picard when learning the news.

“We congratulate the First Nation Child and Family Caring Society of Canada and the Assembly of First Nations for the determination they have shown over the past five years”, added Chief Picard.
