Eight Northern Students Receive Northwestel Scholarships

by NationTalk on May 19, 20101822 Views

Northwestel has awarded eight scholarships worth a total of $20,000.00 to outstanding post-secondary students from across the North. The scholarships were awarded under the 2009-2010 Northern Futures Scholarship Program. Each student received a $2,500.00 scholarship to assist with their post-secondary studies during the 2009-10 academic year.

“Northwestel is dedicated to helping northern graduates achieve their educational goals and dreams,” said Paul Flaherty, Northwestel President and CEO. “We are proud to support outstanding students like the eight recipients for 2009-10. We wish them the best in their studies and encourage them to return to the North after graduation to help make the North an even better place to live.”

“The Northwestel scholarship means a lot to me,” said recipient Myles Hougen of Whitehorse, Yukon. “I’m paying for my education myself through summer earnings, the Yukon government’s Yukon Grant program and scholarships, so the Northwestel scholarship really helps. The scholarship program shows that Northwestel has faith in northern students and, in the long term, it will hopefully mean the North will end up with a more knowledgeable, experienced and effective work force.”

“Students from small remote northern communities who want to go back home for the summer can have a hard time obtaining a summer job,” says Aboriginal recipient Rambo Mackenzie of Behchoko, NWT. “The Northwestel scholarship is a great way to give northern students some help putting together the funds for their education. I am using mine to help pay for my tuition. It’s very generous.”
