First home milestone for Queensland Aboriginal townships – Sydney Morning Herald

An indigenous person is set to buy their own home and land in a Queensland Aboriginal township for the first time. 

Buying land or a home in a Queensland Aboriginal township was previously impossible, but has become available through Hope Vale’s “model home ownership” scheme, arranged by the Australian Government and Indigenous Business Australia, with the help of the Queensland Government.

Premier Campbell Newman will be among those travelling to Hope Vale residential estate, 46 kilometres north of Cooktown, for the “exciting” event. 

He said Monday the scheme would help create a “real economy” in the Aboriginal township.
