Growing a garden has turned into a positive social enterprise for a First Nations community in northern Saskatchewan.

The Flying Dust First Nation at Meadow Lake started a two-acre community garden on the reserve, beside the Meadow Lake River, in 2009. In 2010 they expanded the garden and began selling at the local farmers’ market and the Co-op. Now the Flying Dust Market Garden is up to 35 acres for the 2015 growing season and employs 16 seasonal workers. More are hired during seeding and harvest.

Leonard Sawatsky, who has been involved since the beginning, says the garden was started to improve food sovereignty and food security on the reserve
