As many as 40 Indigenous and a few non-Indigenous students from Elliot Lake Secondary School participated in the walk on Friday, May 3 to remember the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit People (MMIWG2S).

The walk was headed up by Jenifer Brousseau, Algoma District Board of Education Indigenous grad coach at ELSS. She says the walk was to mark Indigenous Red Dress Day which was two days later on Sunday, May 5. On that day, along Highway 17 on Serpent River First Nation red dresses were hanging on trees, as a sign that the MMIWG2S were not forgotten.

The students walked to the intersection of Hillside Drive North and Spine Road in the rain. They were holding signs with such messages as ‘No More Stolen Sisters’, ‘Bring them Home’ and ‘Never Forgotten.’

The Standard interviewed three female ELSS Indigenous students from Serpent River First Nation.
