Indigenous Votes Count #OurLandOurVote

The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP), is encouraging all Indigenous peoples to have their voices heard and cast their vote in the upcoming federal election on April 28th.

“It’s essential that our concerns remain a top priority,” says CAP National Chief Brendan Moore. “While many Canadians are focused on foreign threats, Indigenous peoples face threats at home. We’re marginalized in every major category, from MMIWG2S+ to incarceration, we face structural racism and a government that continues its divide and conquer tactics with its application of the distinctions-based approach.”

CAP has written to all major parties, highlighting the many pressing issues our people face. CAP is demanding equal treatment for all Indigenous people regardless of where they live, inclusion in distinctions-based conversations, and recognition of CAP and its communities, among several others. A full list of demands can be found here: 2025 Federal Election – Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP)

Nearly a quarter of Indigenous people are “Non-Status Indians” – individuals of Indigenous ancestry who identify as Indigenous (Indian) and who were named a distinct group by the Supreme Court of Canada, but are not eligible for registration under the Indian Act. “Non-Status Indians” rarely have access to the same cultural programs and services other Indigenous peoples do. To help change that, CAP believes it is vitally important that all Indigenous peoples stand up and have their voices heard this coming election.

“Your vote is our strength. Together, we can decide this election!” says CAP National Vice-Chief Shawna Jean. “Every ballot cast is a powerful statement of our identity, our rights, and our future. By voting, we honor our ancestors who fought for our voices to be heard and ensure that our communities have a say in the decisions that affect us. This election is a chance to stand united, amplify our concerns, and advocate for the change we need. Let’s make our voices count; our future depends on it!”

CAP recently launched an online guide for Indigenous voters to access information regarding the 2025 Federal Election which can be found here:
