Indigenous wall mural unveiled at Fredericton Campus

FREDERICTON – A new wall mural at the Fredericton Campus of New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) celebrates the region’s rich Wabanaki culture and augments the College’s Indigenous Learning and Engagement Initiative.

The mural, with the theme Together We Rise, was completed by St. Mary’s First Nation member April Marie Paul and was officially unveiled in a ceremony on Tuesday, January 29.

“NBCC recognizes the significance of a renewed relationship with the Indigenous peoples of this land and the importance of creating a culture of belonging for learners,” said Suzanne Desrosiers, Vice-President  Employee and Student Development at NBCC. “The new wall mural at the Fredericton Campus helps us in our goal of fostering a greater understanding of Indigenous culture among students and staff and moves us forward on our journey towards reconciliation.”

NBCC selected Paul, a graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and a current student in the fine arts program at St. Thomas University, to design and complete the wall mural, which will be mounted in the second floor hallway of the Fredericton Campus. Paul is a Wolastoqey/Cree who worked for 15 years as an Indigenous art instructor at Leo Hayes High School and Devon Middle School.
