HALIFAX _ A plan to install a huge tidal turbine in the Bay of Fundy has been put on hold.
CBC says Cape Sharp Tidal is responding to concerns raised by local fishermen.
The Bay of Fundy Inshore Fishermen’s Association has said its members want assurances marine life will not be harmed by the two, five-storey turbines Cape Sharp plans to place in the Minas Passage.
The plan was to install one of the turbines this weekend.
Spokesman Paul Laberge says the company wants to speak further with fishermen about the potential impact on shellfish, scallops, lobsters and whales.
Cape Sharp’s turbines are expected to generate enough electricity to power 1,000 homes.
Matt Lumley of the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy says the bay’s powerful currents could generate enough power for all of Atlantic Canada’s needs, but they have proven too strong for previous turbines.
