TIMMINS – A “self-declared independent First Nation community” is seeking to negotiate new agreements with Ontario Power Generation within established Moose Cree First Nation territory.
The challenge for the “Kapuskasing Cree First Nation” is getting others to recognize them as an official band.
“We speak with these people and give them our concerns,” said Kapuskasing Cree Chief Gaius Napash, who represents approximately 120 members. “And they always come back and tell us, ‘Well, you’re still a member of Moose Cree First Nation.’ Our answer to that is we informed the governments, OPG and Moose Cree back in 2009 that we were going to separate.”
Moose Cree and inland Cree are not members of the same community, Napash said.
