Kimberly Murray Appointed Special Advisor to MKO’s IRS Path Forward Team

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB—Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) is proud to announce the appointment of Kimberly Murray as Special Advisor to its IRS Path Forward project. Her extensive expertise and proven leadership will be crucial as we work toward creating legislation to protect and return First Nations remains and cultural items, all while offering vital support to families.

Murray, a member of the Kahnesatake Mohawk Nation, brings unparalleled experience and dedication to Indigenous justice and reconciliation. Her remarkable career includes serving as Independent Special Interlocutor for Missing Children and Unmarked Graves and Burial Sites linked to Indian Residential Schools. She also led the Survivors’ Secretariat at Six Nations of the Grand River, spearheading recovery efforts for missing children and unmarked burials at the former Mohawk Institute. MKO recognizes her experience as invaluable in addressing the complexities surrounding these critical issues.

Murray served as Ontario’s first Assistant Deputy Attorney General for Indigenous Justice. She was the Executive Director of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada from 2010-2015.

Her distinguished career also includes 15 years at Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto where she was involved in the Ipperwash and Frank Paul Inquiries. Murray’s dedication has earned her numerous accolades, including the National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Law and Justice and the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal of Distinction in Public Administration. Murray is currently an Associate Professor at Queen’s University’s Faculty of Law, where she continues to inspire the next generation of legal professionals.

As the IRS Path Forward program progresses, Murray’s expertise will shape MKO’s future initiatives to develop impactful policies and strategies focused on protection and repatriation. Her deep commitment to Indigenous laws and traditions will anchor these efforts, ensuring they are both impactful and culturally respectful.
