Manitoba Government Announces Progress on Ending Chronic Homelessness
May 9, 2025
The Manitoba government has invested $6.4 million to bring 67 more social housing units online as part of Your Way Home: Manitoba’s Plan to End Chronic Homelessness, Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith announced today.
“There should be no chronic homelessness in a rich country like Canada,” said Smith. “Our government’s plan is working. We’re bringing more housing online and working with partners to get folks housed with the wraparound supports they need to succeed.”
The 67 social housing units established in collaboration with Main Street Project, Siloam Mission and Sunshine House are in the process of being tenanted. The projects include a partnership between Siloam Mission and Main Street Project funded by the Manitoba government.
“We are very excited to be partnering with Siloam Mission and the province for this new housing project,” said Jamil Mahmood, executive director, Main Street Project. “It is good to work alongside other organizations that have been doing this work for a long time and who understand the challenges in housing previously chronically homeless individuals and know how to support them in successfully maintaining housing.”
“We are pleased to work with the province and Main Street Project to bring more housing online,” said Julianne Aitken, interim CEO, Siloam Mission. “Working towards a Winnipeg without chronic homelessness requires this type of partnership and collaboration.”
The province is also funding a supportive housing site through Sunshine House for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
“Through Your Way Home, we have been able to open a new housing project for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community,” said Levi Foy, executive director, Sunshine House. “We have successfully moved residents from encampments into supportive housing units.”
Since Your Way Home was launched, 33 people living in encampments have been housed and 17 encampments have been cleared in just under three months, noted the minister, adding all 33 residents who have been housed remain housed and are receiving wraparound supports with the help of community partners.
The minister also noted the launch of a new web page for Your Way Home, www.manitoba.ca/YourWayHome, where Manitobans can learn more about the plan, project partners and how they can help or get connected with help.
