Message — Message from the Governor General of Canada on the passing of Graham Greene
September 2, 2025
It is with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of Graham Greene, a legendary Canadian actor and Oscar nominee, who died at the age of 73.
Born on the Six Nations of Grand River in Ontario, Mr. Greene’s remarkable career spanned the stage, film, and television. He brought depth, dignity and authenticity to every character he portrayed, delivering countless unforgettable performances. In June, I had the distinct honour of presenting him with the 2025 Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement (Screens and Voices).
A member of the Order of Canada, Mr. Greene broke barriers for Indigenous actors, challenging stereotypes and opening doors for future generations. Today, we honour his extraordinary contributions to Canadian culture and celebrate a legacy that will resonate across Canada and beyond.
My husband, Whit, and I extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched through his work.
Mary Simon
