Mi’kmaq Legends is a multi-media theatrical experience that combines the artistic disciplines of poetry, music, dance and theatre, performed by the Mi’kmaq Heritage Actors. The troupe consists of six young PEI Mi’kmaq men and women. The legends presented are based on traditional Mi’kmaq legends.

Mi’kmaq Legends is a contemporary theatrical experience where traditional legends are presented as short stand-alone segments in a show that can be tailored infinitely to meet the needs of different audiences and venues. New legends are continually being added to the repertoire in a collaborative creation process that involves the writer, cast, community and sometimes, even the audience.

The general format of the legends is to have the cast switch seamlessly between narration and dialogue. Sometimes singing or dancing. The purpose is to evoke the experience of listening to a master storyteller, steeped in the oral tradition of the Mi’kmaq, relating a story that has been passed down for generations. The pace is fast and humour is never far below the surface even in the most harrowing tales. Mi’kmaq Legends is designed for repeated viewings and encourages audiences to return to revisit familiar tales and encounter new ones.
