Minister of CGS celebrates $272 million investment opportunity for high-speed fibre optic communications in Nunavut

Iqaluit, Nunavut (July 12, 2024) – Today, Community and Government Services (CGS) Minister David Joanasie expressed enthusiasm regarding the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) Broadband Fund’s decision to approve the Government of Nunavut’s (GN) application. This telecommunications funding opportunity is unique in that the fund is exclusively dedicated to improving internet connectivity in underserved rural, remote, and Indigenous communities across Canada.

‘’I would like to thank the CRTC for their ongoing support in helping Nunavut bridge the gap, in supporting our work to give Nunavummiut access to telecommunications services on par with other Canadian jurisdictions,” said Minister Joanasie. “Building sustainable communities, preserving culture, and modernizing telecommunications infrastructure is part of the GNs ongoing commitment to improving our quality of life.”

The GN recognizes that access to reliable high-speed Internet will significantly contribute to the fiscal growth of Nunavut by creating jobs, attracting investment, and enabling the delivery of digital services. Our effort is focused on building not only territorial resilience but on serving each of our communities, improving the quality and availability of our connection, while promoting connectivity in the territory.

The Department of CGS will provide more information as they begin to meet the conditions of the CRTC offer and seek approval through GN processes. For more information about this development, please visit the CRTC website.
