May 13, 2025
Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) applauds Prime Minister Mark Carney for ensuring Indigenous representation in his newly appointed cabinet, offering a more accurate reflection of Canada’s diverse people and perspectives.
MKO offers its congratulations to Rebecca Chartrand elected in Churchill-Keewatinook Aski, now appointed Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs. As Manitoba’s sole representative in the Federal Liberal cabinet, Ms. Chartrand’s leadership will be pivotal in advancing issues that impact northern and Indigenous communities.
In a historic milestone, Mandy Gull-Masty, former Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Crees, elected in the riding of Abitibi-Baie-James-Nunavik-Eeyou, has been sworn in as Minister of Indigenous Services. Ms. Gull-Masty is the first Indigenous person to oversee the federal department responsible for serving First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.
Joining them at the cabinet table is Métis Secretary of State for Rural Development, Buckley Belanger. Their collective presence marks a significant step in strengthening Indigenous voices within Canada’s Parliament.
MKO also extends congratulations to the Gary Anandasangaree as new Public Safety Minister, formerly Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs
MKO celebrates this meaningful progress and looks forward to working alongside these representatives to ensure First Nations priorities are championed at the highest levels of government.
