MN–S declares State of Emergency – residents forced to flee

Treaty 6 Territory and Heartland of the Métis, Saskatoon, SK – The Métis Nation government in Saskatchewan joins the provincial government in declaring a State of Emergency. An alarming number of citizens are being forced to flee their home communities as hot, dry conditions and high winds persist.

MN–S President Glen McCallum said, “These wildfires are spreading so unpredictably, and citizens are being evacuated with little or no notice and no destination in place. They’re leaving behind their homes and their livelihoods with little more than uncertainty ahead. Our citizens are the heart of our Nation. We must be able to respond to their needs so that when they arrive at safe locations, they are welcomed with as many comforts from home as we can provide.”

MN–S is mounting response teams and providing boots on the ground wherever they can be most helpful. Our government is here for citizens—mobilizing available supports, sharing critical updates, and working to ensure help reaches those who need it. As we respond, we remain committed to working alongside provincial and federal partners to ensure Métis citizens have access to supports. With additional collaboration and resources, we can expand culturally grounded services, supplies, and shelter for those displaced in this evolving emergency.

This is work that must be done in solidarity with all levels of government to provide the most effective, efficient, community-centred response possible for all citizens in the affected fire zones.

Métis citizens throughout Saskatchewan are asked to do what they can to refrain from any activity that may create sparks, interfere with firefighting efforts, or fan the flames.
