Mosaic Forest Management has released the key findings from its first-ever public survey on recreational access, which received an overwhelming 7,600 responses in just 23 days. The comprehensive feedback has prompted Mosaic to engage an external consultant to help improve its recreation program.

“What we heard was clear. Communities value access to the outdoors and want more and better opportunities to do so,” said Mosaic’s President & CEO Duncan Davies. “The overwhelming response, combined with the thoughtfulness people brought to their feedback, underscores the need to get solutions right.”

The public survey, unprecedented for a private forest company in BC, revealed that for many, the Mosaic land base is the closest place to get outdoors, and sometimes the only place to enjoy specific recreational pursuits. Responses demonstrated that surrounding forests are closely tied to well-being, personal history, and daily life.

Survey participants recognized the role of managed access but also called for improvements to the current gate system, which they described as too limited, arbitrary, and unclear. The public submitted comprehensive solutions spanning user fee systems, infrastructure improvements, refined enforcement, expanded partnerships with recreation groups, and more predictable access arrangements.

Taking Action on What We Heard

Through a competitive proposal process, Mosaic is selecting an external consultant with expertise in recreation, with work to begin this fall. The consultant will explore solutions that address existing issues and better utilize the recreational potential across the land base, while balancing recreation with safety, operational realities, and environmental protection.

Mosaic is committed to continued engagement with recreation user groups, community members, and First Nations throughout this process. Discussions will also take place with local and provincial governments to address challenges that private forest landowners cannot resolve independently.

Public updates will be provided on MosaicForests.com so communities can remain informed and engaged.
