THUNDER BAY, ON: The Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Executive Council celebrates today’s announcement that Oshki-Pimache-O-Win: The Wenjack Education Institute has achieved provincial accreditation through the Indigenous Advanced Education & Skills Council:

“Accreditation is a significant milestone that affirms our Nations’ strength, vision, and sovereignty as we reclaim education defined by our People’s knowledge, and directed by NAN First Nations. We congratulate and honour everyone who has worked so hard over the years to reach this milestone.

Our Chiefs established Oshki-Wenjack with a mission to be the leader in providing excellence in post-secondary education by meeting the educational and cultural needs of our community members through lifelong learning. Since 2001, Oshki has turned that vision into a reality by providing accredited post-secondary programs in partnership with colleges and universities, using on-campus, distance delivery, and independent learning methods. For over 20 years, Oshki has built a strong record of success by providing a safe, inclusive, supportive, and culturally rich learning environment for our students.

This accreditation affirms the institution’s role as a leader in Indigenous-led post-secondary education. It increases the ability of our Nations to inspire Indigenous learners in ways that reflect our identity and culture. Miigwetch to the Oshki staff, Board of Directors, educators, Knowledge Keepers, and community leaders, for their tremendous work to support our students and uphold our inherent right to define our own education.”

Provincial accreditation means that Oshki-Wenjack’s programs are recognized at the same level as all Ontario colleges and universities, while still being rooted in Indigenous culture, language, and tradition. It allows Oshki to continue expanding educational opportunities that are culturally relevant and community-centred.

‘Oshki-Pimache-O-Win’ means ‘A New Beginning’ in Anishininimowin, a reflection of the institute’s mission to foster opportunity, healing, and growth through education. Established in 2001 and renamed in 2018 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Chanie Wenjack’s passing, the institute is dedicated to supporting Indigenous learners through culturally relevant, community-focused programming.
