Iqaluit, Nunavut  – Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok and Finance Minister Lorne Kusugak say the Government of Nunavut is awaiting details on funding announced today in the 2024-25 federal budget for housing, green energy and infrastructure related to Canada’s sovereignty and security in the Arctic.

“Budget 2024-2025’s announcement of green energy and multi-use infrastructure funding will contribute to the vision outlined in our mandate that every Nunavut community is strong, self-sufficient and prosperous,” said Premier Akeeagok.

“We are eager to learn the details of how these programs will help align our vision for Nunavut with Canada’s commitment to securing Canada’s Arctic sovereignty and security. As we press forward with Nunavut’s Lands and Resources Devolution Agreement, investing in programs and services that strengthen Nunavut will better prepare us for the challenges of the future and allow all Nunavummiut to fully contribute to our communities, our territory and our nation,” he added.

Housing was a main focus of the federal budget and included measures to help potential homeowners with the cost of buying their first homes, as well as incentives for housing developers to build new affordable housing.

“The injection of billions of housing dollaras into the new Canada Builds approach will provide Nunavut access to new affordable housing as outlined in our Igluliuqatigiingniq Nunavut 3000 strategy,” said Lorne Kusugak, who holds both the portfolio of Minister of Finance and of Minister responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corporation. “Our government will be working closely with the Government of Canada to leverage every opportunity available to invest in housing for Nunavummiut.”
