Nishnawbe Aski Nation called the move ‘extremely disappointing’ but ‘unsurprising’
The federal government says it will re-introduce a bill supporting First Nations’ rights to clean drinking water in the fall despite recent requests from Ontario and Alberta to drop it.
The legislation in question would give First Nations authority over water and wastewater infrastructure, compelling Ottawa to co-develop funding models for the system. It came after an $8 billion class action lawsuit brought forward by over 200 First Nations for failing to address prolonged drinking-water advisories.
The bill passed through the House in December, but died on the order paper at committee stage when former prime minister Justin Trudeau prorogued Parliament.
