The virtual town halls started on Monday, with four more unscheduled dates
Indigenous leaders in Ontario are holding virtual town halls to explain what they call a historic child welfare agreement that could reshape the lives of thousands of First Nations children.
The Nishnawbe Aski Nation and the Chiefs of Ontario signed a nine-year, $8.5-billion deal with Ottawa earlier this year. The agreement is designed to give First Nations greater control over child and family services, moving away from a system that has long separated Indigenous children from their families and communities.
The deal still requires approval from the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal before it can be fully implemented, but leaders say it represents a turning point.
