Premier R.J. Simpson offers condolences on the passing of Sam Gargan
September 15, 2025
Premier R.J. Simpson extends his deepest condolences on the passing of Sam Gargan, a respected Elder, leader, and former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly whose lifelong service to the people of the Dehcho and the Northwest Territories leaves an enduring legacy.
“Sam Gargan was a dedicated leader who gave decades of service to the Northwest Territories. Over four terms as the Member for Deh Cho, including his final term as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, he helped guide the consensus system with fairness and respect, strengthening the foundation of our legislature.
As Grand Chief of the Dehcho First Nations, he pressed for progress on land claims and reminded us that the choices we make today must stand the test of time. Later, as Mayor of Fort Providence, he continued his lifelong commitment to community service.
Sam was a residential school survivor with a deep commitment to truth and reconciliation. He also believed strongly in engaging with youth, encouraging them to raise their voices and shape the future of the territory, and sharing his knowledge of the land and waters. His service was recognized with the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, an honour that reflected his lifetime of service.
His wisdom, humility, and advocacy will be deeply missed. On behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories, I extend my condolences to Sam’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. His legacy of leadership and service will endure.”
