Public cites Terry Fox and Louis Riel as top historical figures – Ottawa Citizen

OTTAWA — Terry Fox and Louis Riel did more to shape Canada than Pierre Trudeau, Tommy Douglas or Sir John A. Macdonald. Achievements for women such as winning the right to vote in 1917 and the landmark “Person’s Case” in 1929 are bigger deals in Canada’s history than the introduction of medicare or either world war.

Those judgments, at least, reflect the views of the 1,000 Canadians who completed the survey on the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s “My History Museum” website over the past three-and-a-half months.

The website sought public feedback on individuals and events that shaped our history, objects or stories Canadians want to see in their new history museum, and perspectives should be used to tell our national story. Visitors were able to “like” ideas suggested by museum staff or propose additions.
