To say that Fiona Chell was excited to attend a mini powwow at the Royal Canadian Legion on Monday would be an understatement.
The Grade 5 student was among 120 students, teachers and principals from C.C. Loughlin and Sacred Heart Elementary to take part in the event organized by the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band and the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District. The powwow was part of the Mi’kmaq Culture and History Community Project the students have been involved with for the past eight weeks.
During the powwow the students took part in drumming, dancing, making crafts and a gift giveaway.
Chell, a C.C. Loughlin student, isn’t Mi’kmaq, but has Sioux ancestry and really like hearing that Sioux were proud warriors.
