The Secret to Good Tea weaves a powerful, contemplative story about the relationship between a mother and daughter as they process the intergenerational trauma caused by the residential school system.
Canada’s residential school system operated for more than 150 years and was a systematic effort by the Canadian government to eradicate Indigenous culture and force assimilation. These schools, operated by various sects of the Christian church, often subjected Indigenous children to emotional, physical, sexual and mental abuse.
At least 150,000 children were forced to attend these schools, and not all of them came home. The last school closed in 1996.
