FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 17, 2025

ANISHINAABE AND DAKOTA TERRITORY, MB — The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is extending condolences to the family of the late Marcedes Myran.

A member of Long Plain First Nation, Marcedes was only 26 years old when her life was violently ended by a serial killer.

Grand Chief Jerry Daniels states:

“The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Marcedes Myran.

Today, the RCMP have confirmed that the remains of Marcedes, a 26-year-old woman from Long Plain First Nation, were found at the Prairie Landfill.

This is a bittersweet moment. We are heartbroken for Marcedes’ family, friends, and Nation on the loss of this beloved young woman. I want to commend the loved ones of Marcedes for their ongoing strength and advocacy in helping to locate her.

I also commend and lift up the searchers. Your work is so valued and appreciated. I am hopeful this development helps to bring closure and healing to Marcedes’ family and loved ones.

The actions that have taken place to help bring this young woman home show us the immense power of love.

Too many of our families are impacted by violence against women. The positive identification of Marcedes’ remains reminds us of the urgent need to establish effective measures to protect our women, girls, two spirit, and gender-diverse relatives. Our citizens deserve to be safe, respected, and valued.”

These tragic findings reaffirm SCO’s commitment to continue advocating to address the systemic issues that continue to put First Nations people in danger.

SCO honours the memory of Marcedes, Morgan Beatrice Harris, Rebecca Contois, Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe (Buffalo Woman), and all our stolen sisters. Their lives and legacies will not be forgotten, and we will continue to demand justice and meaningful change.
