Statement from Acting Chief Nathan Beck
Greetings Membership,
Moose Cree First Nation has been made aware of a video circulating on social media of a moose calf intentionally being struck by a truck then beaten to death with the blunt side of an axe by the travellers that encountered it on the James Bay Winter Road.
Like many of you, I was shocked by this video. This disrespectful and cruel behaviour is completely unacceptable and is a violation of traditional Cree harvesting practices.
On behalf of the Council, I would like to use this incident as an opportunity to remind everyone to show respect for all animals and birds during the spring harvest this month.
Please remember the teachings of our Elders by engaging only in traditional harvesting practices when out on the land at all times of the year. The moose, the geese, and everything that we harvest are gifts from the Creator and should be treated accordingly.
Moose Cree First Nation will also be forwarding the video to the proper authorities for a possible investigation.
Thank you.
