Statement from Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict and the Ontario First Nations Young People’s Council on Transgender Day of Remembrance

(Thunder Bay, Ont.–Nov. 20, 2024) Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict and the Ontario First Nations Young Peoples Council (OFNYPC) have issued the following statement in recognition of Trans Day of Remembrance.

“Today we remember the lives of transgender individuals who have been lost to violence and discrimination. This day is a reminder of the work we must continue to do to address the root causes of violence and oppression, including colonial legacies that have disrupted the traditional roles and respect held for gender diversity within our cultures,” said Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict.

“As young leaders, the Ontario First Nations Young Peoples Council stand in solidarity with transgender, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people and recognize the systemic barriers, injustices, and harmful stigmas that continue to impact them in First Nations communities and beyond

The OFNYPC recognizes that the violence and hate directed at gender-diverse people stems from systems and attitudes that need to change. Diversity in gender and identity has always existed and it’s time to reclaim that respect and understanding. Drawing strength from our teachings will help us work toward a future where diversity is celebrated. We stand with you and send our love and support to everyone mourning a loss today. We will keep working for a future where everyone can live without fear,” said Kieran Davis, Co-Chair, OFNYPC.
