Taykwa Tagamou Nation receives Financial Management System Certification
On March 30, 2021 Taykwa Tagamou Nation (the “Nation”) received a Financial Management System (FMS) Certificate from the First Nations Financial Management Board (“FMB”). This means their finance and administrative governance practices now meet FMB Standards, which are based on internationally recognized standards of financial management.
About Taykwa Tagamou Nation:
Taykwa Tagamou Nation, formerly known as New Post First Nation, is a Cree First Nation band government whose residential community is located in the Cochrane District in Ontario, Canada, along the Abitibi River. As of March 2021, they had a total registered population of 667 people, of which 123 people lived on the reserve.
On their journey towards FMS Certification, the Nation developed a Financial Administration Law (FAL) and also received a Financial Performance Certificate making the Nation eligible to apply for long term affordable financing from the First Nations Finance Authority. To achieve FMS certification, the Nation began working closely with the FMB staff to bring their FAL to life.
When asked about why Taykwa Tagamou Nation moved forward with FMS Certification Chief Bruce Archibald, said “I want to extend my deepest gratitude and thanks to all of Council, TTN staff, and community volunteers who have continued their service to our community through essential operations over this past year. From operating the community food bank, to serving at security checkpoints, to on-call crisis operations, to helping guide our spiritual and cultural practices – our community has truly banded together. Without the support of these individuals, we would not be able to continue to provide these programs and services and receive a Financial Management System (FMS) Certificate, and I am eternally grateful for everyone’s hard work and sacrifice.”
The FMB acknowledges the strong leadership of Taykwa Tagamou Nation Chief and Council and the dedication of their staff that were key into achieving FMS Certification.
