Wendake, May 2, 2025 – The First Nations Education Council wishes to congratulate Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Liberal Party of Canada team for their recent victory in the federal election.

Education is a fundamental pillar of self-determination and we applaud the Liberal Party’s commitment to continue the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

For 40 years, the First Nations Education Council has been promoting the control of education by and for First Nations, and plays a key role in the educational success of over 6,000 students. We look forward to working with all members of Parliament and all parties to build a future where our young people can reach their full potential and attend the ideal school.

We reiterate the necessity of making major investments to bridge the gap in education and school infrastructures, essential to the sustainability of our member communities. The First Nations Education Council looks forward to continuing its collaboration with the government to sustain these commitments.

“For the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to translate into concrete actions, it is essential to enhance the educational initiatives adapted to First Nations realities,” declares Denis Gros-Louis, Director General of the First Nations Education Council. He continues, “The First Nations Education Council reaffirms its willingness to work closely with all federal partners to ensure a culturally safe educational path that is a catalyst for success for all students, in line with the Regional Education Agreement. The renewal of this agreement represents a critical opportunity to consolidate the gains in self-determination and reconciliation.”
