Thematic Briefing – Inter-American Commission on Human Rights

March 15, 2012 (Ottawa, ON) – The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) and the Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action (FAFIA) announced today that they have been granted a hearing by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on the subject of the Disappearances and Murders of Aboriginal Women and Girls in British Columbia.Jeannette Corbiere Lavell, President of the Native Women’s Association of Canada, says “we are pleased to have this opportunity to discuss the human rights violations taking place in Canada with the members of the Inter-American Commission. One of the Rapporteurs for the Inter-American Commission investigated disappearances and murders in Ciudad Juarez. The Commission members are experts on the obligations of governments to protect women from violence.”

Sharon McIvor, spokeswoman for the Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action, says “The aim of our organizations is to seek the assistance of expert human rights bodies in the Inter-American and the United Nations systems so that we can bring an end to the violence in Canada and ensure that Aboriginal women and girls enjoy equal protection of the law.”

NWAC and FAFIA have been assisted in preparation for this briefing by Caroline Bettinger-Lopez from the University of Miami Human Rights Clinic. Ms. Bettinger-Lopez was counsel in the case of Jessica Lenahan (formerly Gonzalez) against the United States, which was decided by the Inter-American Commission in August 2011, and related to the duties of the State to respond to situations of violence against women with diligent protection measures.

The hearing will take place on March 28 between 9 and 10 a.m. in the Padilha Vidal B room at the GSB Building of the Organizations of American States, in Washington D.C. Séance d’information thématique – Commission interaméricaine des droits de l’homme

Ottawa (Ontario), le 15 mars 2012 – L’Association des femmes autochtones du Canada (AFAC) et l’Alliance canadienne féministe pour l’action internationale (FAFIA) ont annoncé aujourd’hui que la Commission interaméricaine des droits de l’homme (CIDH) leur a accordé une audience au sujet des disparitions et des meurtres de femmes et de filles autochtones en Colombie-Britannique.

Jeannette Corbiere Lavell, présidente de l’Association des femmes autochtones du Canada, a déclaré : « Nous sommes heureuses d’avoir cette occasion de discuter avec les membres de la CIDH de violations des droits de la personne qui ont lieu au Canada. Un des rapporteurs de la Commission interaméricaine a fait enquête sur des disparitions et des meurtres à Ciudad Juarez, au Mexique. Les membres de la Commission sont experts en ce qui concerne l’obligation des gouvernements de protéger les femmes contre la violence. »

Sharon McIvor, porte-parole de l’Alliance canadienne féministe pour l’action internationale a déclaré, pour sa part : « Notre organisation a pour but d’obtenir l’aide d’organismes experts en matière de droits de la personne dans le système interaméricain et celui des Nations Unies pour que nous puissions mettre fin à la violence au Canada et faire en sorte que les femmes et les filles autochtones jouissent d’une égale protection de la loi. »

L’AFAC et la FAFIA ont été aidées par Caroline Bettinger-Lopez, de la Clinique des droits de la personne de l’Université de Miami, pour préparer cette séance d’information. Mme Bettinger Lopez était avocate dans la cause de Jessica Lenahan (née Gonzalez) contre les États-Unis, qui a été tranchée par la Commission interaméricaine en août 2011, en rapport avec les obligations de l’État de répondre aux situations de violence envers les femmes par la prise de mesures de protection avec diligence.

La séance d’information aura lieu le 28 mars, de 9 h à 10 h, dans la salle Padilha Vidal B, édifice GSB de l’Organisation des États américains, à Washington, D.C.
