Positive tests and outbreaks linked to COVID-19 are increasing in Canada, according to the federal government’s latest data.
The rise in the respiratory virus has resulted in a growing number of reported hospitalizations across the country, the latest Canadian respiratory virus surveillance report found.
What does the data show?
The report found that 11.4 per cent of COVID-19 tests were positive, with 2,799 detections, as of the last reporting week ending Sept. 27. This percentage is compared to rates for influenza and RSV.
Ninety-seven per cent of lab-confirmed respiratory viral outbreaks reported in recent weeks have been connected to COVID-19, it added.
“I think to nobody’s surprise, in the late summer and early fall, we’re starting to see a rise in COVID-19,” Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist based at Toronto General Hospital, said in a video interview with CTVNews.ca on Tuesday. “We can also expect shortly to see a rise in influenza and respiratory syncytial virus, as we enter the mid-fall to late-fall season.”
