Introduction

The First Nations Health Managers Association (FNHMA) and the First Nations Housing Professionals Association (FNHPA) entered a strategic partnership in 2022 to build and advance healthy housing for First Nations across Canada and work together on this important social determinant of health. Whereas the FNHMA is focused on supporting First Nations health leaders, the FNHPA is a national not-for-profit professional association that supports individuals working for or aspiring to housing management positions with First Nations organizations. The FNHPA provides training, certification, and professional development opportunities related to housing in First Nations.

Housing in First Nations communities remains a challenge across many First Nations. Access to safe, supportive, and appropriate housing impacts the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of individuals, families and Nations.

Working together, the FNHMA and FNHPA aim to support the development of tools and resources that promote healthy housing and strengthen relationships between First Nations housing and health professionals. In alignment with this vision, the FNHMA and FNHPA recognized the opportunity to work together on a toolkit that seeks to break down western silos and fosters collaboration between these workforces, supporting a wholistic approach to well-being in First Nations communities.

Objective

The FNHPA and the FNHMA are seeking to create a collaborative toolkit to support the needs assessments and the integration of work between these sectors. This toolkit aims to bridge that gap by facilitating collaboration between health and housing organizations. Acting as a comprehensive roadmap, it will guide teams through conducting effective needs assessments, fostering meaningful conversations, and breaking down barriers across sectors.
