Aboriginal Consultation Policy
On August 16, 2013, Alberta released The Government of Alberta’s Policy on Consultation with First Nations on Land and Natural Resource Management, 2013. This new Policy is the product of the First Nations Consultation Policy review and would not have been possible without the ongoing commitment of First Nations, industry, municipal and other stakeholders to engage with Alberta in the multi-year review process.
This new Policy represents a major step in an ongoing process to improve First Nations consultation in Alberta. The new Policy will strengthen the consultation process for all-involved parties and help ensure Alberta’s legal duty to consult continues to be met in a way that respects Treaty rights.
The policy will not take effect until Alberta’s Aboriginal Consultation Office is operational, likely in fall 2013. Alberta Aboriginal Relations will soon be engaging First Nations and other stakeholders in working sessions critical to effective Policy implementation. In the meantime, Alberta’s current policy remains in effect.
