Eight Ontario Doctors named to Order of Ontario

Toronto, ON Feb. 5, 2015 – The Ontario Medical Association congratulates the 26 new appointees to the Order of Ontario – eight OMA members are among the most recent Ontarians invested into the order.

“On behalf of Ontario’s Doctors I would like to offer my congratulations to these remarkable Ontario physicians,” said Dr. Ved Tandan, OMA President. “Their contributions to excellence in health care and their commitment to patient care are a value to this province.”

Named as members to the Order of Ontario in these most recent appointments were:

  • Dr. Ming-Tat Cheung, a cardiologist and medical researcher, for his contributions to medical research. Dr. Cheung was lead investigator on numerous cardiac studies and was at the forefront of the 2003 fight against SARS.
  • Dr. Michael Dan, former neurosurgeon and philanthropist, for his contributions and support for Ontario hospitals, local charities, and First Nations health and human rights initiatives.
  • Dr. Patrick Gullane, a head and neck surgeon, for his enormous contributions to the field of otolaryngology.
  • Dr. Gary Levy, founding director of the Multi-Organ Transplant Program at Toronto General Hospital and director of the Living Donor Liver Program for the University Health Network, for pioneering the use of living donor liver transplants in Canada.
  • Dr. Hans Messner, renowned scientist and physician, for his pioneering work in bone marrow and stem cell transplantation.
  • Dr. Dhun Noria, surgical pathologist, chief of laboratory medicine and medical director of laboratories at the Scarborough Hospital, for her unwavering commitment to health care.
  • Dr. Jeffrey Turnbull of Ottawa was named as an appointee to the Order in recognition of his work as Medical Director of Ottawa Inner City Health, which provides medical care to Ottawa’s homeless.
  • Dr. David Williams, renowned Canadian astronaut, physician, for his contributions to two NASA space missions, including conducting some of the first surgeries in space.

These appointments were part of 26 new appointments announced by Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell on Feb. 3, 2015. Former Lieutenant Governor Lincoln Alexander established the Order of Ontario, the province’s highest official honour, in 1986. Over the past 29 years the Order of Ontario has recognized individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field benefiting the people of Ontario or abroad.
