IQALUIT, Nunavut (February 21, 2018) – The Department of Environment, in collaboration with the Department of Education, is pleased to launch two books on environmental stewardship, We Take Care of the Environment and My First Hunt.

These books are part of the Ikpigittiarlugik Nuna Imarlu (Respecting the Land and Sea) reading series, a unique, Nunavut-developed educational series that integrates environmental stewardship, hunting practices, and knowledge of Nunavut’s land and sea into culturally appropriate children’s books. The books are available in Inuktitut and English and are supported by in-classroom activities and teacher resources.

“The Government of Nunavut recognizes the vital importance of early educational opportunities and the children’s books we are launching today will enable students to learn about environment stewardship as they mature into adulthood,” said Minister of Environment Elisapee Sheutiapik.

“The production of these high quality books enhances our literacy program and will provide our students the opportunity to learn about environmental issues that Nunavummiut face,” added Minister of Education David Joanasie. “We are very happy to collaborate with the Department of the Environment on this important initiative.”

The Ikpigittiarlugik Nuna Imarlu reading series is a companion series to the Department of Education’s balanced literacy program, Inuktut Titiqqiriniq.
