Regional Emergency Services launches new FireSmart photo contest encouraging homeowners to take FireSmart action at home

(Fort McMurray, AB – July 30, 2020) –Regional Emergency Services has launched a new FireSmart photo contest to encourage residents to take FireSmart action at home this summer.

The contest allows residents to enter by submitting a photo of themselves completing a simple FireSmart task at home. Those who submit a photo online will be entered into a draw to win one of four chainsaw prize packages. Participants must be at least 18 years of age to enter and can submit up to one photo per eligible FireSmart task (up to seven entries per household).

Eligible FireSmart tasks range from cutting grass to moving wood piles away from the home.

“Over the last few years, we’ve treated more than 400 hectares of municipal forest with FireSmart prescriptions to help reduce our wildfire risk. That’s equivalent to the size of about 500 baseball fields” said Jody Butz, Regional Fire Chief. “But being FireSmart as a community is more than just treating our forests. It’s about working collectively to reduce risk where it exists, including residential property. I think the community has been very receptive to this over the years, and this photo contest is a great way for residents to show us how they are continuing to take FireSmart action at home.”

How to enter:

Residents can enter the FireSmart photo contest by going to rmwb.ca/FireSmartAtHome. There, they can review the FireSmart Begins at Home Brochure for a list of eligible FireSmart tasks to complete.

When a task is completed, residents can submit a photo of that task online to be entered into a draw.
