The Government of Yukon tables amendments to the Municipal Act
October 26, 2015
WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon today tabled Bill 89, a Bill to Amend the Municipal Act. This is the result of the government’s commitment, made during the Our Towns, Our Future initiative, to conduct a thorough review and provide an updated Act.
“The Municipal Act provides a foundation for strong local governance and is crucial to the sustainability of Yukon communities,” Minister of Community Services Currie Dixon said. “The amendments strengthen the Act by incorporating feedback gained from an extensive, three-year review process involving the Association of Yukon Communities, municipalities, Local Advisory Councils, First Nations and the public.”
In April 2012, the Municipal Act Review Committee—including representatives from the Government of Yukon and the Association of Yukon Communities (AYC)—conducted a formal consultation with municipalities, local advisory councils, First Nations and the public. In early 2014, the committee released the Municipal Act Review Findings Report with an extensive list of observations. The Department of Community Services then began a targeted consultation with the AYC, municipalities, First Nations and the public on proposed Municipal Act amendments.
“The Government of Yukon is committed to supporting local governance,” Dixon added. “I am proud of the work we have done with our partners to ensure this legislation is the best it can be.”
The proposed amendments aim to help provide clarity and consistency in the legislation. For more information about these potential amendments and the entire review process, please see Community Services’ Municipal Act page.
