The Government of Yukon invests more than $2 million to support territorial sport and recreation organizations
November 25, 2024
The Government of Yukon, in partnership with the Yukon Lottery Commission and Sport Canada, is investing over $2 million, an increase of $320,000 from last year, in territorial sport organizations, special recreation groups, athletes and officials.
This annual funding represents an investment aimed at strengthening and growing sport and recreation across the territory.
The funding assists Yukon sport and recreation organizations with managing and organizing programs and activities related to athlete participation and development, coach and leadership growth, rural and Indigenous sport development, special projects and facility operations and maintenance. They also support individual athletes and officials who have demonstrated they are at an elite or high-performance level.
The funding is distributed through four streams:
- Foundations Grant Program
- Podium Pathway Grant
- Yukon High Performance Athlete and Officials Assistance Program
- Elite Athlete Assistance Program
The territory’s sport and recreation organizations provide programming that keep our communities healthy and active. Yukon athletes inspire us all with their commitment and achievements, and the Yukon government is pleased to support their efforts with this funding.
Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn
Quick facts
- Foundation Grant Funding helps Yukon sport governing bodies and special recreation groups develop and deliver sport and recreation development programs and initiatives.
- Podium Pathway Grant supports enhanced sport participation and leadership initiatives, including increasing the involvement and participation of rural and Indigenous youth.
- The Yukon High Performance Athlete Assistance program provides funding for athletes who have demonstrated performance beyond the territorial level, with potential improvement at the provincial, national, or international levels.
- The Elite Athlete Assistance program funds athletes who are carded by Sport Canada and assists them to prepare and participate in international sport.
- Earlier this year, the Government of Yukon announced an increase in funding to support the sport community. As part of this, the Yukon government increased Sport Yukon’s 2023–24 operational funding with a one-time increase of $130,000, as well as additional funding to help establish and administer the Sport Enhancement Fund.
