JOB SUMMARY: The Language and Cultural Coordinator reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Gahwajiya:de’ Detenatgwa’ta’ – Family Gathering Program Supervisor or designate.

PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

The Cultural/Language Coordinator is responsible for developing and implementing a high quality culturally enriched learning environment through play and a variety of formal and informal settings. The program vision and guiding principles intended outcomes ensure safe play-based cultural learning experiences for children six months to 12 years; promoting the emotional, cognitive, social, and physical well-being for children and their families through the values of Haudenosaunee language and culture. The Cultural Language Coordinator will be scheduled to participate in childcare programs within Brantford and Brant County and Six Nations of the Grand River territory, along with supporting Early ON programs.

Cultural/Language Coordinator will ensure the implementation of “How Does Learning Happen”, Excerpts from ELECT document, and comply with Child Care and Early Years Act, Six Nations Elected Council Employment Policy, the Six Nations Council Health and Safety Guidelines, Six Nations Child Care Procedures and Guidelines and Brantford Early ON Procedures.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school Graduation Diploma from a recognized Secondary School or a General Education Diploma (GED) with 2 years’ work experience with children aged 0 to 10 and families.
  • Knowledgeable about the Six Nations culture, teachings, language, and traditions.
  • Work experience with special needs children is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Experience working with children/families in a daycare/school setting an asset.
  • Continuous upkeep of knowledge about the Six Nations Iroquois culture, teachings, language and traditions.
  • Will be able to create age-appropriate teaching resources for transfer of teach primary words/phrases from either Mohawk or Cayuga language
  • Continuous learning and skill development with attending workshops, conferences, educational courses pertaining to your profession

  • Good organizational skills and an ability to work independently and as a strong team player; good interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent computer skills and demonstrated proficiency in current business software
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Experience working with families and children in a community setting
  • Ability to teach primary words/phrases from either Mohawk/Cayuga Language
  • Ability to be patient, and can relate to children and adults with equal respect and dignity, regardless of life experiences, culture and values
  • Be sensitive to and act on the individual child’s developmental needs
  • Communicate clearly both written and verbal with adults and children
  • Thoroughly familiar with relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines, i.e., requirements set out by the Child Care and Early Years Act.
  • Works within the organizational structure and administrative policy and procedures established by the Six Nations Employment Policy, Six Nations Childcare Services, the Six Nations Social Services values, principles, and relevant funding agencies. Inclusive of Brantford Early ON and Brant/ childcare programs
  • Preference will be given to Six Nations Members
  • Knowledge of WHIMIS will be considered an asset
  • Aware of community diversity concerning culture, values, and customs
  • Knowledgeable of the impacts of multi-generational trauma on families and the community
