Michipicoten First Nation (MFN) is a vibrant Anishinaabe community located on the white sands (Northeast shores) of Lake Superior near Wawa Ontario. The registered population is approximately 1,400, with 70 members living on the reserve. With a strong sense of community and cultural identity, Michipicoten First Nation strives to maintain harmony and balance with Mother Earth, neighbouring First Nations, and surrounding communities.

Michipicoten First Nation is seeking a full-time Project Engagement Coordinator (PEC) to facilitate the Nation’s participation in the Wawa to Porcupine Transmission Project. The Wawa to Porcupine Transmission Project has been designated as a provincial priority project under the Ontario Energy Board Act (OEBA) and will undergo routing studies, a provincial environmental assessment, and construction between 2025 and 2030. The PEC will be responsible for all aspects of Michipicoten’s participation in this process, including community engagement and technical reporting, while working closely with Hydro One’s Indigenous Relations team. It is anticipated that the day-to-day responsibilities and focus of this role will evolve as the project progresses through its various phases.  This position may be based out of Wawa or Sault Ste. Marie, ON.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, etc. preferred
  • Eligibility for, or existing membership in, a relevant professional organization is considered an asset

Experience

  • 3-4 years of experience in the environmental field.
  • Experience with reviewing and preparing technical reports, such as Environmental Study Reports, Environmental Screening Studies, Species at Risk Assessments, etc.
  • Experience interpreting and facilitating projects under the Environmental Assessment Act.
  • Experience with environmental field work, such as environmental monitoring or environmental compliance, is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Understanding of current provincial and federal legislation, such as the Environmental Protection Act, Environmental Assessment Act, Endangered Species Act, etc.
  • Knowledge of Ontario’s industry standards and Best Management Practices for development projects.
  • Familiar with the Crown’s Duty to Consult, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the principle of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent would be an asset.
  • Familiar with online resources required for environmental desktop reviews, such as Ontario’s Natural Heritage Information System, Ontario’s Watershed Information Tool, iNaturalist, etc.
  • Proficient in standard desktop packages, i.e. Word, Excel, MS Project, MS PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS software, including ArcGIS Pro.
  • Proven research, analysis, oral, and written communication skills
  • Cultural awareness, sensitivity, and understanding of Indigenous culture and Michipicoten history.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with a variety of individuals.
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Other

  • Must possess a valid G Class driver’s license and own a vehicle
  • Able to provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract
  • Able to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check

LOCATION:  Wawa, ON

TERM:  Full-time, Temporary (5-year contract)

WAGE RANGE:  $33.39-$37.19/hr
