AMC Welcomes Back Sioux Valley Dakota Nation; Officially Advocates for Sixty-Three First Nations in Manitoba

Waywayseecappo, Treaty Four Territory – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) is pleased to announce the return of the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation to the AMC member-Nations. The inclusion of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation to the Chiefs-in-Assembly, means that the AMC now advocates for all 63 First Nations in Manitoba.

AMC Grand Chief Cathy Merrick states, “Together, we are stronger and more united in our efforts to uphold our treaty rights and advance our inherent sovereignty and self-determination while addressing critical social and political issues affecting First Nations across the province.”

Sioux Valley Dakota Nation was officially welcomed back as a recognized member of the AMC on June 20, 2024, by the AMC’s Executive Council of Chiefs, which is the source of authority between Assemblies.

“The AMC is the provincial organization that represents First Nations, and to make it complete, Sioux Valley needed to come back in,” said Sioux Valley Dakota Nation Chief Vincent Tacan. “It is better to be on the inside looking out than on the outside looking in.”

Chief Tacan sat at the table for the first time in 15 years and participated in the elections and resolutions during the AMC’s 36th Annual General Assembly in Waywayseecappo First Nation this week. This milestone marks a new chapter of collaboration and unity for the First Nations in Manitoba.

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs remains dedicated to advocating for the rights of its member nations. “I look forward to working with Chief Tacan and all First Nations Leadership to build stronger relationships, drive meaningful change, and ensure lasting advocacy,” concluded Grand Chief Merrick.
