Educational Package launched for Highway 30 Returned Lands Consultation
(Kahnawake – 10, Enníska/February, 2025) The Lands Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce the release of an educational package designed to facilitate community engagement in the consultation process for the recently returned Highway 30 and Chateauguay lands.
In collaboration with the Lands Unit, the consulting firm BC2 was tasked with conducting a feasibility study on several parcels of land along the boundaries of Highway 30 and Chateauguay that were recently transferred back to the community by the federal government. As mandated, BC2 developed an extensive report on the feasibility of the types of designations for lands.
To ensure the community can share feedback on the future of these lands, the MCK is currently undergoing a consultation process on potential designation options.
It is essential that all community members have access to relevant information regarding the lands, their surrounding environments, and any access challenges. The educational package highlights the constraints associated with each parcel, allowing community members to express their concerns and perspectives without external influence.
The document is available for review here
“No plans have been made for these lands, and the primary objective is to gather and consider the community’s input before any decisions are made on designation,” stated Veronica Leborgne, Director of Lands. “Equally important is ensuring that the community is fully informed of the constraints on these lands, so that we can make decisions that reflect the best potential uses or preservation of the land.”
