Free Wildfire Training Opportunity for Métis Youth – Build Skills for the Future

Are you a Métis youth interested in making a difference in your community? The National Indigenous Fire Safety Council (NIFSC) is offering a FREE Introductory Wildfire Training Program designed specifically for Indigenous youth aged 15–30. This program will take place between November 2024 and March 2026, providing both hands-on and online training opportunities in your community.
Why Participate?
Wildfires are an increasing challenge across Canada, and having the skills to prepare for and respond to them is more important than ever. This program offers an opportunity to gain foundational knowledge in wildfire safety, develop career-ready skills, and make a positive impact on your community.
Program Highlights
Participants will complete a combination of online learning and in-person training, covering essential topics such as:
- S-100: Basic Fire Suppression and Safety
- Learn how to respond to wildfires with skills like using pumps, hoses, nozzles, and other safety equipment.
- S-185: Fire Entrapment and Avoidance Safety
- Understand how to assess risks and ensure personal safety during wildfire incidents.
- ICS-100: Incident Command System
- Gain a foundational understanding of emergency management through this online course.
- WHMIS: Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
- Complete an online course covering hazard classifications, labels, and safety data sheets, which are essential for workplace safety.
Who Should Join?
This program is open to Indigenous youth aged 15–30, including high school students (grades 10–12), college students, and community members. It is also an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in joining local fire departments or pursuing careers in wildfire management.
What to Expect
- 2 Online Classes: Learn at your own pace with flexible scheduling.
- 2 Days of In-Person Training: Participate in hands-on practice and live demonstrations with experienced instructors.
This training not only builds critical wildfire preparedness skills but also serves as a stepping stone toward future employment opportunities in wildfire safety and emergency management.
