The Honourable Derek Bennett, Speaker of the House of Assembly, is pleased that the Newfoundland and Labrador Legislature is once again participating in the Moose Hide Campaign today. This year marks the eighth consecutive year of the Legislature’s participation. The national Moose Hide Campaign Day is tomorrow, May 15.

The Moose Hide Campaign is a grassroots movement of Canadians committed to protecting women and children and speaking out against gender-based and domestic violence, grounded in Indigenous ceremony and traditional ways of learning and healing.

The symbol of the Campaign is the moose-hide pin, representing solidarity in taking a stand against violence, supporting reconciliation and honouring Indigenous culture.

Members of the House of Assembly began the day with reflection and prayer in the Chamber. The ceremony included a video message from Raven Lacerte, co-founder and national ambassador of the Moose Hide Campaign, a short video documentary regarding the Campaign, as well as reflection and prayer with Inuk Elder Emma Reelis.

Quote

“As Speaker of the House of the Assembly, I am pleased to mark our Legislature’s eighth year of participation in the Moose Hide Campaign. The participation of Members of the House of Assembly is an important commitment to reconciliation, and to our personal and collective stand against violence towards women, girls and two-spirit plus individuals. I wish to extend sincere gratitude to Elder Emma Reelis for her thoughtful reflection today, and to former-Speaker and the Member for Lake Melville, the Honourable Perry Trimper, for bringing this important campaign to the Legislature eight years ago. I further invite everyone to participate in the national Moose Hide Campaign day tomorrow.”
