Inuit Welcome Party Platform Commitments to Bring Inuit Nunangat into Canada
April 25, 2025
Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami is encouraged to see Inuit priorities reflected in platforms from the three national parties ahead of the federal election on Monday. We will work with the new government to bring Inuit Nunangat into Canada through a strong Inuit-Crown relationship.
We are pleased to see commitments from both the Liberal and Conservative parties to working through a collaborative Inuit-Crown structure.
One of the biggest projects ITK has undertaken is the creation of an Inuit Nunangat University, the first Arctic university in Canada. The Liberal platform commitment to would contribute to the goal of opening to students in 2030.
We recognize and appreciate the Liberal platform reference to nation-building projects as well as funding for transportation and marine infrastructure, multi-use Arctic defence infrastructure and housing for Indigenous communities in collaboration with Indigenous peoples.
We also note the Conservative platform’s references to major Arctic defence investments including military infrastructure in Iqaluit and Inuvik, and icebreaker capacity.
The NDP commits to addressing infrastructure deficits in Inuit
The parties have outlined commitments to make life more affordable and services available for Inuit families and children. Both the Liberals and NDP commit to supporting the Inuit Child First Initiative, a crucial program that helps ensure Inuit children have equal access to essential health, social and educational support. Both parties also commit to reforming Nutrition North Canada to better address food insecurity in Inuit Nunangat.
We look forward to engaging with the next Prime Minister and cabinet to secure our shared sovereignty and advance the joint priorities of Inuit and Canada.
